Meet Londons finest fashion designer Denz as we talk about making your own self edited pieces, designer inspirations, sneaker chats, earliest fashion memories, and all things being comfortable in your own clothes. A huge thank you to Denz in speaking with us on this occasion to talk about his love for fashion, be sure to go over to his Instagram @denz4l4 and keep up with everything he's been doing.
Hey Denz, please can you give an introduction to yourself for anyone who isn't yet aware of your work?
Alright, so my names Denz also known as DRKHIVES, 22, from West London, I'm a fashion stylist and creative director.
And how did you get into fashion?
Mainly through my mother, she’s a fashion designer/seamstress and when I was young being around her working with top designers and seeing produce amazing pieces I grew a passion for it.
Are there any designers out there that inspire you?
I could name a few, obviously I'd put Virgil there, the great definitely, but Alexandra McQueen mainly because I saw my mum produce some of his work. I'd definitely put Nigo there because of how he was able to bring streetwear into the fashion scene and the founder of RUDE, they're some designers that definitely inspire me and my style as well.
What was your earliest memory of buying your first fashion piece?
Damn, my first fashion item, I was ten or eleven, and I was going for something that would match my AirMax 1's, it was like these red and green ones and I went to some vintage store. At the time I was looking for some like polos in those times, so I found this Ralph Lauren long sleeve polo and it was like white and red, these times I'm thinking like 'this piece, I'm gonna wear for my best'. I think that was the first item I copped, I remember I went to some African party and everyone was saying it was hard.
What does your collection look like right now, how big is it looking, what sort of pieces do you have in there?
Yeah, my clothes collection right now is very packed out, I'm even trying to get rid of a couple, there's a lot of tapestry pieces in there, since August, I've fell in love with the material and how you can create neat designs and art pieces, lot of hoodies, a lot of stand out short sleeve shirts, obviously the cargos, and a lot of designer self edited pieces that I've made as well.
Do you often make your own adjustments?
Yeah, most of the time I get a piece, I always think how could I make it better, how can I make it stand out or how can I make it a staple piece. So, if I got a pair of jeans or a shirt, I'll try and see how I can add edits or adjustments, or even if the jeans are bland then I'll try and edit it completely. At the end of the day it's about being unique, it's about making your own aesthetic.
Have you ever thought about making your own brand?
That's definitely coming soon, defo a thought in mind, stay tuned, something in the making.
Are you a sneaker man, or just purely clothes?
No, I'm also a sneakers person as well but mainly clothes, that's the first passion.
What sort of sneakers are you into?
The normal, Jordan 1s, 3s, and 4s. Yeezys are up there, dunks obviously, I've been feeling Bape recently.
Are there any you look at and think are not for you at all?
Yeah there’s not many anything after the Jordan 7 are dead except from 11, also Yeezy 500 and 380s should of never been made.
Have you ever thought about customising your own shoes?
I definitely want to edit my own shoe at one point, probably like a Yeezy mainly, or like a Nike shoe, but yeah, I just want it to be like a everyday trainer probably and something that has some colour.
How do you pair an outfit, do you have any tips for people struggling to put an outfit together?
The first thing I need to think of is location, so that the outfit matches the place I'm going to, then I go for inspiration, inspiration's very important, I look through Pintrest, Tumblr, Instagram, Twitter. Just type in any artist that you like, anyone you like the style of, me personally, I look at art pieces.
Another thing is just to be yourself, don't copy another mans style, I'm not saying don't take inspiration from them but remix it, put your own originality into it, make your own style, wear something completely wild.
Have you got any advice for anyone that's worried about how they look when dressed?
I'd say, step out of your comfort zone, wear something you'd never think of wearing in your life. The whole point in dressing is to be confident in what you're wearing. If someone else doesn't like it, it doesn't matter.
Before we ask our last question, do you have anything you would like to add or promote
