Meet conceptual photographer Anson, often known as ShotByAnson or SBA as we talk all things photography and videography, best and worst parts of the photography process, equipment recommendations, and all things career goals. A huge thank you to Anson for speaking with us on this occasion about his incredible work. Be sure to go over to @photosbyanson to take a look at his work and keep up with everything he's doing this year.
Hey Anson, please can you give an introduction as to who you are and what you do for anyone who isn't yet aware?
Yo my names Anson go by the name of ShotByAnson or if you that’s to long for you SBA. remember the name. I’d say I’m an artist of all kinds I never like to box myself into one sector of the creative industry I’m mainly at the moment focusing on photography and cinematography but I’d like to explore music at some point in the near future. I’m based up in the north east born n bread in a town called Middlesbrough.
How did you get into photography?
I guess it all started by just snapping pictures on my phone then I joined a creative media course in college and as soon as I picked up a camera as corny as it sounds I just knew it was meant for me.
For sure, what's your opinion on phone photography?
Photography’s about the vision and the concept in my opinion more than how expensive the equipment you use is it’s all down to how you use the tool to express your creativity.
Do you recommend and specific equipment?
I would say well for me purchasing a more compact camera helped a lot because you end up taking it everywhere with you therefore capturing unimaginable things whereas a big camera there’s less insensitive to carry it into random places you have to plan a lot more lighting is crucial as well weather that’s just a flash head or portable lighting.
100%, what would you say your favourite part of the process is?
For me it’s the editing part because It’s where I get lost in my own reality it’s where I get to learn new things as-well as a lot of experimentation.
Is there a least favourite?
Probably the fact I’m always in my own head when creating and feel like there’s always something missing but I guess most creatives feel the same we always strive to be better.
What's the photography goal for you?
To be walking through cities looking up and seeing my work on billboards.
As you started photography, did videography come naturally or did you have to learn as you went?
I had a lot to learn technically when stating out however I feel creatively I've always had my own vision but everything I've learn was gradual through trail and error and a lot of perseverance.
Is there a scenario that you prefer, for example, gig photography?
Conceptual photography including styling is what I love the most I can bring my vision to life plus I have a massive love for fashion.
Have you ever thought about making your own clothing brand?
Yeah but that’s not happening until I gain enough knowledge and know the correct people.
Have you got any favourite spots in Middlesbrough? Is it good for creativity?
I wouldn’t say so but those who are creative shine and I’d say it gives us more ambition to create as there’s little to do around here so to keep your self busy you have to do something productive at least that’s the way I view it.
Where do you think the most creative places in the world are?
I'd probably have to say like London or New York, something basic.
Are there any photographers currently that you're loving?
Max.dur, Tj.saw, Nicofroe, and Moi.digital. A few people I always find myself being amazed by.
Do you have any advice for someone looking to start photography?
Follow your own creativity and don’t try and Imitate others just experiment and learn from what you don’t like and like.
Finally, do you have anyone you would like to shout out?
Yeah shout out my main model @tsarsick and everyone’s who’s been involved in my journey so far.
