American rapper Coi Leray began posting music on SoundCloud, with her debut mixtape ‘Everythingcoz’ in 2018. Collecting an influential background from her father Benzino as he was the co-owner of the magazine ‘Source’ as well as a short music career, being a magazine showing an ‘iconic hip-hop cultural institution’. Being famous for also being part of an argument with Eminem that involved the magazine. However, it was later known in his life that he didn’t have the best relationship with Leray as she had discussed the bond they didn’t have in the track ‘No More Parties’. When Coi was 14 she used to post her music online to her father's YouTube channel with her brother Taj, releasing tracks like ‘Bow Down’, after time she went on to release her own solo record and visuals to ‘Rock Back’. She had told Paper Magazine that she had always known she wanted to music so she had quit her job, went home, and written a few songs, from that point on she said “it was lit”. After quitting her job, she moved back in with her mum and made it happen.

As of 2019, she was dating Trippie Redd at the beginning of her career for several months, but like most rappers, the relationship was very public and led to them splitting, giving Redd a chance to address their relationship in the track ‘Leray’ on his album ‘A Love Letter to You 4’. However, from her side of the relationship she had come out and said that she felt as though he was using her for clickbait. When featuring on an episode of No Jumper, she was asked how she felt when having first listened to the break-up track, and she replied

“At first, no, I didn't like it. It was very like, what the fuck, because I always thought we really had something outside of the music. So I’m just like, damn. If you got something to say, let’s get together and you say that shit to my face. I felt like I’m being used for clickbait. He’ll sell out with or without me, but at that point, I just felt like he coulda just called me, you coulda just hit me, DM’d whoever, emailed. You coulda got the message the fuck out there because we’re very connected. You ain’t have to go ‘head and put me down like that in a song”.

However, she went on to say that she does respect him as an artist, stating that she’s putting her feelings into songs and that Trippie had done it very well, and for that, she has respect for him.

In 2019 she had said that things were moving very fast and that she was just planning to “keep going and going”. She also went on to be a part of the ‘Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse’ soundtrack as she had told XXL that it was one of the biggest movies in the world at the time and was of course one of her biggest achievements.

Fast forward to 2021, Coi Leray is up there with several other artists in having a huge TikTok music sound, used by millions upon millions of audio users, this includes the tracks ‘No More Parties’ and ‘TWINNEM’. At the time REVOLT had said that she was “definitely one of the hottest artists”, having had a dance made on TikTok, helping the song ‘No More Parties’ go viral. Also being the track that has revelations about her relationship with her father, reading:

“I’m too busy getting this money, counting this cheddar, my daddy let me down, but I promise you, I won’t let up, I wanna say fuck that man but that shit won’t make me better, me and my brother still beefin’ right now, ‘cause he ain’t get that letter”.

The track then saw a remix, featuring Lil Durk as Leray took to Twitter and said that Durk believed in her and the song, showing up and showing her love, stating that she will never forget that moment. She also came out and said that Durk had helped and prevented her from quitting music, saying that she almost gave up one day with Durk telling her “don’t ever stop”, and that most artists show love from a distance but Durk had believed in her and been behind Leray ever since, thanking him publically for his support towards her, before and after the track was released. The remix to the track had peaked at number twenty-six on the Billboard Hot 100 and was at the time on the road with Durk and Lil Baby as an opener for their ‘Back Outside’ tour.

After Coi had released her other track ‘TWINNEM’ she had to come online once again to state that she is not just a TikTok artist as she tweeted “Call me a tik tok artist, but just so you know. When an artist drops music it gets uploaded to TikTok as well. Whether they chose to promote and have fun with the record, that’s on them… but I got a family to feed, ima get mine regardless”.

Moving onto November 2022, the track ‘Players’ dropped after her ‘Trendsetter’ album dropped in April 2022 with features from Nicki Minaj, Nav, and G Herbo. The track has blown up on TikTok, especially in the UK as it has also been in the charts and has been in the top twenty for the past few weeks, peaking at number eleven this Friday, potentially becoming her first UK top ten.

Coi Leroy has had such a huge career so far and we cannot wait to see what hits she will be bringing out in the next few months. You cannot miss this girl online and she simply isn’t planning to go anywhere, anytime soon.
