Arguably, Central Cee is one of the biggest UK rapper to come out of 2022, shown by his numbers, his fans, and his style. To start off the year, back in January, Cee released the highly anticipated track "Retail Therapy", the first single from the upcoming album "23", which was released in February. The music video now has just under fifteen million YouTube views and seven million worldwide Spotify streams to date.
After the fifteen-track album was dropped, it was evident that Cench knew what he was doing in the scene, he knew how to get his songs to blow, how to make them sound, and what to write for the lines to be so catchy. Opening with the track "Khabib", putting himself in a position in which he's vulnerable and honest as we see him talk about pre-music struggles and what he had to go through to get to where he is today, when he says "Why the hell would I dwell on the past when I make profit off the pain I felt (Pain)." and, "I was dead broke, I had no hope, I sat and I thought 'bout ending my life, I was down bad and they asked me how I am, I got up like a man and I said I'm alright". Being able to see his struggles with mental health.
Track six, "Eurovision" was used to show off Cee's connections overseas, as we saw Rondodasosa and Baby Gang, A2Anti, Morad, Beny Jr, Ashe 22, and Freeze Corleone. This was special because even though it was in various different languages, you already know they were spitting some of the hardest bars you'll ever hear. Due to the mixtape being several tracks that were touched by Cench, it was obvious it was going to blow, being one of many number-one mixtapes for Cee. He followed this by previewing some very controversial lines from his next track, of which were of course "How can I be homophobic, my bitch is gay, Hit man in the top, try see a man topless, even the stick is gay, Huggin' my bruddas and say that I love them but I don't swing that way".
Obviously, Central Cee knew what he was doing here, using such controversial words that haven't really been used in UK rap before. It was such a strategic move from him and his team, people were talking about it for weeks! The audio of the snippet of the track blew up on TikTok, leading Cee to release the full track "Doja" in July 2022, being one of the biggest songs of the year, let alone the summer. Being streamed on Spotify with two hundred and fifty-eight million streams and seventy-six million YouTube views, being the first UK video to be filmed by American superstar, director, and editor Cole Bennett and uploaded on the Lyrical Lemonade channel. For Cee to do these sorts of numbers on a channel that isn't his own is huge for UK rap.
Central Cee has had a great end to the year too, being the only ever UK rap artist to reach one billion Spotify streams, shown in his artist Spotify wrapped up at the end of November. He was also nominated for a MOBO, in the categories, the song of the year, best male act, best drill act, and video of the year. Coming out winning the best male act of the year as well as the winner for the best video of the year.
Cee was also taking part in his worldwide tour "Still Loading" earlier in December. So our question to you is, do you think that Central Cee has already loaded to the best of his ability, or do you think he is truly 'still loading'?
We're excited to see what Cee can bring to the table in 2023 and hope to see the bar being raised more than ever. To keep up with everything Central Cee be sure to follow him on all socials.
