Is Stormzy too late?

We all know that Stormzy has been a very busy guy this year, with his fingers in a whole lot of different pies but we're here today to talk about the discussion on everyone's Twitter lips. Is Stormzy too late to make a hit to be overriding anyone else in the UK rap scene this year, and if the answer is no, can Dave and Cench be handed the crown on the UK rap charts?
As we're very aware, Stormzy kick started this year after just releasing his album 'This Is What I Mean', following an announcement for 'This Is What I Mean Day', a festival based around the album and the artist to be held in Victoria Park mid August. After this announcement, Stormzy pulled a classic social media hiatus, until just a few weeks ago.
On June 18th, he hit us with the 'Wagwannnnnnn you lil pussyholes' and of course, the comments fed him with a ton of lovely messages, some from celebrity friends and some from pure, die-hard fans, a few reading "This guy just does what he wants and I'm here for it lol", and "damn how long do we have you for this time". As your able to post more than one photo per post on Instagram, he treated us to nine different snippets of his life that we were yet to have seen before, previewing new music.
We were then given further updates on this track the very same week as we were presented with a clip of the track 'Toxic Trait' featuring none other than Fredo, two we're slowly starting to hear from this year so it's only right we get them together at once. After the release a lot of fans were in the comments after being told Santan Dave produced the track, leaving comments like "If Dave produced it, you know it's already gonna be firee". Via YouTube, some of the comments are stating that this is one of his best tracks as of recent, for example, "Best tune he's done in years. Sick production from Santan as well", "man this is a banger, stormzy and fredo never disappoint", and "Goes hard as usual, love to see it". The track is currently on just under two million views on YouTube, for Stormzy to come back with a collab with Fredo, this is poor for the two in our opinion.
Following this, just to prove he's really back, he dropped 'Longevity Flow' randomly via YouTube. In our opinion, this track is way better than the other with Fredo. We have been dying for Stormz to go in on a solo track like this for quite some time so now we've finally got it, we cannot complain, however, the debate online right now is 'Is Stormzy too late to be going for the throne?'.
Chuckie Online, a guy that knows what he's talking about in the scene, took to twitter to bring a debate to life regarding the rap star. It all started late last year as he tweeted "'The industry online allows one person to be the guy' I don't believe this anyone tbh.", when being asked who the two at the top where he responded with "Easy. Stormzy and Dave". A few replied to this stating that Daves biggest moments are normally while Stormzy is on hiatus, so which is it?
We then get to just six days ago when Chuckie had tweeted "Stormz isn't playing the numbers game at the moment. He'll get drawn in by default just bcoz the moment a song is uploaded it gets counted but he ain't caring about that tho. And so he shouldn't to be honest. The only thing he needs to on right now is just rapping". A follower @JKCPLTO had replied with "But both the rapping is average, combined with the numbers. Need to have an honest conversation.. His single with Fredo isn't even projected to go top five which is poor considering what his peers Dave, Cench, and Hus are doing. Also the bars are basic similes and punchlines".
We really believe that Stormzy could feel threatened with all of the upcoming talent coming from the scene and the fact that Dave and Cench are currently number one in the charts for the third week running, doing numbers that Stormzy cannot reach right now, for example, the track 'Sprinter' from Dave and Cench at the beginning for June, broke so many records, one being the most streamed rap song on Spotify that week. The track hit over fifty million streams in two weeks on Spotify and is currently sat on forty million YouTube views.
Will Stormzy be able to get the rap crown again any time soon? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
