Today I'm joined with Leicester bound Kane Winehouse as we talk about his latest single ‘Reminiscing by the Window’, how he feels when up on stage performing in front of people, his music inspirations and of course, some amazing advice for anyone who needs it! A huge thank you Kane for his time and efforts in talking to us, be sure to head over to Instagram and follow him on @kanewinehouse to keep up for all new music dropping soon.
Hey Kane, please can you give a quick introduction to who you are, what you do, and where you're from?
I’m Kane Winehouse, 21 years old songwriter/artist, and I’m based in Leicester.
How long have you been making music for?
I’ve been making music for a good while but I didn’t put out any records until May last year, I wanted to practice and improve my songwriting until I was content, and that’s when I started releasing.
How long before you put out music were you practicing and improving for?
College I’d say I really got invested into the music so the last 5 years.
And what is it about creating music that you love, how does music make you feel?
I’m just in love with the whole process. From writing the songs, to the studio sessions with my boy Nikul, to releasing them. I lose track of time. It’s a way of life and I live and breath it. I don’t want to be doing anything else. It makes me feel liberated, because I have the space to unload and speak my truth. It’s helped me heal myself through a lot.
I hear you! Do you get inspired by other musicians, if so who?
Most definitely! I love Frank Ocean and The Weeknd. I feel like as ‘artists’ they’re perfect embodiment's. A lot of time and thought goes into their work. Abel gets very creative with his visual narratives whenever he drops a record. I’ll definitely be taking a leaf out of his book for my first album. J. Cole is a huge inspiration too, he’s one of the realist lyricists.
Would you say your music is very American heavy?
Yeah for the most part, which is ironic because I have a very distinct UK sound. That being said I’m still very tapped into the UK scene. Knucks, Sainté, Loyle Carner, DC, Dave are all inspirational to me. The newcomers like Strandz, Glizz and Tskinz are shelling it too!
How would you describe your sound?
Coming of age
For sure, what's the goal for you?
The goal for me is very simple, and that’s to keep creating. I’m currently in the process of crafting together my debut album so a lot of energy is going towards that.
Could you describe to me what it feels like being on stage?
So I performed for the first time in my home city back in March and the LOVE was really felt. It was such a sick experience being on stage and performing. Now I’m familiar with it I’ll make sure to shell the next one even harder! Shout out to Vegim and Francesca too! They discovered my music and drove all the way from London to see me perform and drove back that same night. I couldn’t fathom it, it brought a tear to my eye.
I hear that, when people go out of there way to do things like that it’s incredible! What can we see of Kane for the rest of the year?
New sounds, new vibes, even more creativity! My EP ‘Gone Like Tears in the Rain’ comes out this summer and I get more personal and vulnerable than ever before. The lead single ‘Reminiscing by the Window’ came out May 12 so go get that.
I appreciate that! If someone hasn’t already listened to your track, what is the message behind it?
The record is directed towards an ex lover. When writing it I wanted to encapsulate the love I felt towards her, opposed to projecting any ill feelings or bitterness. Some things don’t always work out and that’s okay.
That’s a very nice meaning, are we going to see a music video?
There are definitely visuals in the works, although that will likely come out sometime after the release.
We’ll get ourselves ready for that movie! What’s your opinion on remixes? Would you make one?
I think remixes can be cool if executed the right way. I’d definitely be open to it as long as there was good chemistry with everybody, why not?!
Absolutely! What do you think the music scene is missing at the moment?
I can’t really think of anything that’s missing in my personal opinion. I feel like if you look hard enough there’s an abundance of talents and authentic artists. I’d just say that there’s a scarcity of authentic artists in the mainstream scene but they are out there. I’d like to see more break through.
Do you have any advice for anyone looking to rise in the scene?
Don’t try to be anybody else. Be yourself, create for yourself, not what you think people want to hear and have faith in your vision. Try not to care about what anyone thinks. That seems to be the winning formula for a lot of the greats and even if you’re not a creative, it’s just an all round good way to live your life. These people are the most content.
Finally, do you have anyone you would like to shout out?
Shout out to the team man. Nikul, Harshiv, Soham, Rick, Amy, Craig, Shabaan, Kuldip, Kajol, Anand. They all play a HUGE part in the journey so far. And shout out to my fellow Leicester creatives Narissha, Tyde and M’Kiah! These guys are absolutely KILLING it, I can’t wait to see them up!
For sure! Thank you so much for your time, very inspiring.
