This month we got in touch with rapper and music producer BKayy from North London to talk all things favourite rappers, how he was able to get into producing music, and some very special advice for anyone getting into music. A big thank you to BKayy for his time and efforts in speaking with us, be sure to go over to Instagram and drop him a follow @knownasbkayy and stay tuned for what he's got coming this year.
Yes Bkayy, please could you give an introduction to yourself for anyone who may not be aware?
Yoo, I’m Bkay. I’m a 15 year old artist from North London, I’ve been doing music from young buck, I started off as a DJ, then progressed to Producing, and then I eventually moved taking music seriously mid-way through last year.
All at the age of 15? That’s crazy. How did you learn to DJ?
I’ll be so real, it all came from the people around me, because there are a few people on my family who do music.
I see, who were your musical influences growing up? Who were you playing?
I was influenced by rappers like Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Otis Redding.
Would you say it was more UK stuff or more American?
When I was younger, I would say it was American stuff, but as I grew older, I started to listen to more UK artists like, Nines, Giggs, JME, Skepta.
Are you more of a grime man?
Yeah, my mum kind of put me onto it, also I can’t lie she also put me onto more UK artists, not necessarily grime but people like Krept and Konan, Mostack, and Abra Cadabra.
Those are all very valid artists, you cannot fault her choices, tell me more about being a producer, how did that happen?
To be honest, I was bored. I downloaded the trail for FL Studio, and it all just happened from there. I did producing from 2018 up to early last year.
How come you stopped?
Because whilst I was doing producing, I discovered how to record and mix in FL Studio, so I kinda drifted from beats and focused on music. I still produce here and there. I even produced the beat for the song I have on Spotify.
That’s so sick that you just have that skill at hand, do you produce all of your own tracks?
Naa I don’t, there’s a few unreleased that I’ve produced, but the audience ain’t hearing those. It’s music made before I was as lyrically advanced as I am now. And I don’t really wanna be seen as a basic artist.
Have you got any music coming up?
Ahh nah I don’t have anything planned as of right now, but hopefully I’ll be able to announce something soon.
How would you describe your music to someone who may not have heard it before?
My music isn’t something you describe because I can cater to many audiences, I can do drill, real rap, afroswing, so it all kinda depends what vibe you’re looking for.
Do you have a favourite genre?
Probably real rap or drill.
Is there a reason or do you just vibe best on that genre?
To be honest, I feel like I vibe best on that genre.
Is there one that you just wouldn’t try?
Probably alternate music, like rock. Just not really my thing at all.
Have you got any advice to anyone that wants to be a rapper?
That’s a good question still. My advise is find your own style. Tryna do the same thing everyone else is doing most likely won’t get you anywhere, sometimes that isn’t the case but yk, you never know how this rap ting can go for you. Another thing is to network with people and invest in your craft, because when you invest, you’re always most likely to get something out of it.
Do you have anybody you would like to shout out, anyone that’s helped you out, someone you’ve been listening to recently, anyone you like?
To be honest the people that I really want to shout out and I can say that helped me with the whole engineering thing, I could probably say N3, who’s recently had an interview with you lot as well. And also my uncle, my uncle really influenced me in doing music from young and most of my family has actually so that made me enthusiastic about it, just people around me in general that’s helped me do music.
Appreciate your words Bkayy, thank you for your time.
