Meet The Lowkey Introvert, also known as East London's finest musician Isaiah Shoticuary as we talk about his different musical sound, favourite artists, dream collabs, and all things on his latest single "The Harsh Reality". Huge thank you to Isaiah, be sure to follow him over on Instagram on @thelowkeyintrovert to keep up with all of his latest tracks.
Hey Isaiah, please could you give yourself a quick introduction to anyone who isn't already aware of your work?
Yes, yes, yes, my name is Isaiah Shoticaury (also known as the lowkey introvert). Yeah I kinda got to many names. I'm an alternative rap artist and producer from East London, making my own sound and just trying to figure it out. I make music and it's all I know, it's my first love and will always be.
How long have you been making music for?
Low-key been around 3 years but .. yeah 3 years to be honest, it's not even low-key I guess why I said low-key because it's been a long journey but yeah, three years.
For real! How did you get into it?
Through times with my parents really. I remember when I was young like roughly ... 4 or 5, my mum was playing "If I Rule the World", that Nas song, it kinda lit a spark in my head that I can do it, the feeling of the song as a child there made me feel happy because that song gives you hope of changing the world. Since then I knew how driven, determined, and dedicated to make this my life type ting.
I respect that, have you got any favourite musicians?
Too many to name and say, it's a long list still. Definitely Kanye, Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, Tame Impala, Kaytranada. Can't lie, Drake is in there still, The Prodigy, SZA. And listening to the music from my peers.
Would you say you're more influenced by US artists?
Yeah and no, growing up I was influenced by US artists but the more I was getting older I started hearing music from different genres whether the artists are from UK or US.
I hear you! How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn't yet listened?
Very alternative with a dysfunctional sound mixed with some storytelling, low-key kind of made my own genre "dysfunctional soul". Always doing the unexpected and leave everyone guessing. The music and lyrics will speak for itself.
I've listened to your stuff and it's so cold purely because it's different. What's next for you musically? What does 2023 look like for you?
I appreciate that man, means a lot thank you. What's next is we continue the process and the momentum. With the new single being out called "The Harsh Reality" produced by your boy. The shortly dropping the EP, then 2024 second album. Everything has been recorded, all the people that are part of the projects have done their parts, it's go time.
Go time, I like it! How did you come up with the track "The Harsh Reality"?
Based on reflecting really, you begin to see things happening around you, and you don't really know how to handle and see what you can do to fix it or change it, but you're aware of it, you know what I mean? With "The Harsh Reality", I'm just basically saying what's on my mind and just being honest with it, when you hear it, you'll see what I mean. It's a song that everyone can relate to.
Was it an easy pick to be the first single?
No, it wasn't easy, it was very very very hard because during the last 6 to 7 months, I've just been recording, producing, and having sessions with different artists but I planned and mapped it out, where some of the songs that didn't fit the second album, they will be dropped sooner with an EP as a closing chapter to the sound I normally make.
Will we be getting a music video?
Yes, yes, yes you will, visual is done, dropping soon and it's special.
What do you think of remixes of tracks, would you ever make one for any of yours?
Who knows , only time will tell but it's possible.
If you could work with anyone in the world, dead or alive, who are you picking?
Dream collaborations man, it's tough. Kanye will definitely be one of them because of production, inspiration, motivation, and determination. I've got from him and the ability to alwaus bet on yourself. Stevie Nicks, The Weeknd, Kaytranada, Skepta, J Dilla, Missy Elliot, Crazy Titch, Dizzee, DJ Luck with MC Neatm Project Pat, Tyler The Creator, ASAP Rocky, Travis Scott, Nia Archives, Frank Ocean, Goldie, FKA Twigs, James Blake and Kendrick. I got more but that's all I got so far.
Respect your music taste a lot, finally, do you have anyone you would like to shout out, a friend, someone you're liking at the moment, anyone you like?
Shout out to everyone that's been supporting the journey, I met a lot of artists that shown me love and support and really helped me getting better at my craft and shit. I want to shout out my mum for being a strong woman and encouraging your boy to never limit myself. The boys for always comig to the shows and turning up with me, honest deep conversations I had with artists like Micheal Abraham, Fred Jones, JoeJas Retro, and that's just to name a few, I got toooooooo many people to shout out, it's a book.
Thank you Isaiah, real nice guy, can't wait for the new music!
