Meet Morgansuniques, a fashion designer and photographer from Liverpool as we talk about all things custom pieces and making his own clothes, other fashion influences and names like Virgil Abloh, and of course, some perfect advice for anyone looking to break into fashion. A huge thank you to Morgan for speaking with us on this occasion and the effort he had put in to do so. To keep up with all of his current and future work, drop him a follow on @morgansuniques.
Hey Morgan, please can you give an introduction as to who you are and what you do for anyone who isn't yet aware?
My name's Morgan, but some know me as Morgansuniques, I'm a fashion designer, graphic designer, and photographer based in Liverpool.
How did you get into fashion design?
I've always been into fashion since I was a kid, when I discovered Virgil Abloh in 2016 I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer and ever since then I've been pushing as much and doing as much as I can.
What was it about Virgils work that you liked most?
My favourite thing about Virgils work is probably the cuts and silhouettes he uses, not only that but his colour palettes and also the way he's taken the abstract style of street wear and engraved it into high fashion.
Absolutely, are there any other fashion designers you like the work of?
Yeah, of course, some of my favourite fashion designers are probably, Rick Owens, Liam Hodges, Robyn Lynch, and Eastwood Danso.
Is the fashion game missing something or is there always something for everyone?
Yeah there's always something for everyone in the fashion industry but I feel like a lot of brands shy away from the customers a lot, the customers are the ones buying the clothes. One thing I can do is make whatever the customer wants, someone could message me and say "I want this being made" and they say how they want it to be made, any details they want and then I go away and do it. With my brand, a lot of the time the customer is in control, unless I drop something I've personally already made.
That's a very cool advantage, are you liking any small businesses at the moment?
A small business that I really like at the moment is another fashion designer called Robyn Lynch, she's a very talented fashion designer and some of the clothes and collaborations are very cool.
I hear it! What's the goal for your work, where do you want to be?
My biggest goal for my brand in fashion is probably for my clothes to be worn in Paris Fashion Week on the runway.
Very achievable, do you remember the first fashion piece you had?
The first thing I made, I painted a pair of jeans, I painted a load of crosses, all over black, red, and white on a pair of Levi Jeans, that was in 2019.
Do you find it hard to find new ideas that nobody has ever done before?
No, ever since I was a kid, I've always looked at things different from everyone else, for example, I'd see a bit of clothing and my first initial thought is how I would make that mine, how I would change it and expand it.
For sure, you said in your introduction that you did photography, how did you get into that?
I used to own a brand in 2019 with a friend called Coley Graphics, we didn't have many facilities, the reason I started photography was because I didn't want to trust someone else to do my job, I'm the only one who known exactly how I want it, same goes for graphics design, when I started that it was because I wanted to be able to do it all myself and not have to depend on anyone else, and also to show people that I'm an all round creative.
Are you a shoe man or purely just clothing?
Yeah, I'm a shoe collector, I'm not a singular set type of guy, I've got a very wide collection.
Do you have a top five?
I'd probably say, number five my Nike Air Runners, number four, my blue and white Airmax 90s, number three, my Drake NOCTAs, number two, my Jordan 4 Black Cats, and number one my Rick Owen DRKSHWs.
Are there any shoes that you've seen and thought 'not a chance I'm wearing those'?
Honestly, no, I'm very open when it comes to shoes, I feel like most shoes you can make look good but I'd probably say, White Air Forces, I feel like they're just basic and overused.
What's next for you?
I have a lot of stuff coming up, one in particular, a drop coming out very soon, it's a project I've been working on for about three months, it's going to be really good when it drops.
Do you have any advice for someone trying to get into fashion designing?
If you truly love something and truly want to make something, then just make it. The only thing that matters is that if you like it. Also, learn to play with imperfection, if it doesn't work for you, leave it and come back to it, when you go back to it your mind is fresher.
How does the creative scene work in Liverpool?
Being a creative in Liverpool is almost perfect because there's so many different cultures, there's almost an audience for anything.
Any favourite spots?
I really like Chinatown, I also really like the Baltic areas, some of my favourite spots to shoot at.
For sure, finally, do you have anyone you would like to shout out?
I'd love to shout out, Coleygraphics, Lanky.io, and ABondphotography, without them I don't think I'd be the creative I am today, we all collab and make amazing stuff together.
Thank you for your time Morgan, appreciate your efforts.
