Meet SplitMCR, a clothing brand in Manchester, producing the heat for the streets right now, as we talk about waiting around for Supreme drops, working solo on your own brand, affordable pricing, and all things new sets for later on in the year. A massive thank you to Split for speaking with us today. Make sure that you go straight over to Instagram and drop them a follow on @splitmcr to be sure to see their next drop. If you own a Split piece, you know how comfy and affordable they are so make sure you spread the word to everyone you know and grow in a beautiful community of people.

Hey guys, please can you give an introduction to your brand for anyone that isn't already aware?

We're Split, a streetwear brand based out of Manchester, we started in December, I do all of the designs, run the page, and do everything by myself, all the photography and that, it's something I always wanted to get into and it felt like the right moment so I just went for it.

What sort of products are you guys producing?

I started off first with hoodies, tees, and beanies, just to keep it simple and gauge interest in the brand. As we grow I want to produce more intricate pieces; coats, and jackets.

For sure, your pieces are cold, before you had your own brand, which brands inspired you to make your own?

I used to skip college lessons back in 2018/2019 to go onto the Supreme website every Thursday to try and buy what they had dropping, me and my mates used to sit on the field and it was just somewhat a community and I like the fact that if you ever saw someone wearing Supreme, you knew they had done the same thing and that's what I wanted to create, a sense of community and a sense of 'I know, you know about Split'.

I also used to love the marketing of Palace and the fact that they’d make absolutely anything and stick a palace logo on it and make it their own too.

Absolutely, did you ever manage to pick up something on the drop days?

I remember getting the navy bandana box logo hoodie and it made my week. Was genuinely telling anyone who’d listen about it and how hard it was to get.

Do you find that those sorts of brands were cheaper back then compared to what they are now?

Yeah, and that's the reason I wanted to start my own brand, I wanted to be able to provide good quality items at affordable prices because I'd spent so much money on other brands and the prices were increasing and the quality wasn't increasing with the prices, it was still the same quality, and I'd rather spend money on one t-shirt that lasts me a year than spend sixty pounds on one and it lasts me six months.

I think with a lot of brands, you pay a premium for the name and the logo, which is why they're able to have the lower quality to get a higher price because you are paying for the name and the status that comes with one of the pieces.

I hear what you're saying! Coming from Manchester, who are your competitors?

The streetwear scene in Manchester just isn't as big as it is down South, but it is growing. You see brands like Drama Call doing collabs with Adidas and rappers like Aitch, and that's somewhere I'd like to be with Split, it's a friendly competition and I highly doubt they know who we are but that's somewhere I want Split to be, that's the goal, to be able to produce clothes with other people and create a community within Manchester as well.

For sure, who's your dream band to work with?

That’s a good one. I’d love to work with someone like Meekz or Aitch. Both were born and raised in Manchester and I feel like I could put something together that would really bang. Not just a logo on a tee but a design that tells a story of an album or a track that they’re dropping I reckon a Drama Call collab would be mental too, two Manny-based brands coming together to create something special.

Of course! If you were to work with someone or a brand would you 100% want it to be with someone from Manny or is there anyone outside of Manny you’re liking?

I’d definitely be open to working with people outside of Manchester, someone with a growing presence in their own space Rappers like Songer, El Londo, Knucks, or even with brands on the come-up like Parismo or Track Mafia, similar size to us but blowing up in their own cities.

Very achievable, where do you want the brand to be in five years?

I’ve never really thought of it in that way as such, when I was younger I just dreamed of having my own brand, never about the money or success that could come with having one. I remember chatting to my mates and saying it didn’t bother me if Split didn’t take off, it was more about the fact that I had an idea and a vision and ran with it. A big goal of mine is to see someone out one day just wearing one of my tees, someone I've never seen before, repping what I've made.

That sounds like the ultimate goal! What did you want to do before Split career-wise, did you ever have a dream job growing up?

I’m actually in uni for biomedical science, I always wanted to be a doctor or work in a lab, either with cancer or stem cell research. Not as interested in it as I used to be but having a backup master's degree can’t be a bad thing hahaha.

That's so sick, do you want to go into that field still or is it just a straight clothing brand right now?

It’s more of a backup option at the minute, putting a lot of my time into trying to market and push split at the moment.

What's your opinion on brands like Trapstar?

Think they’ve absolutely smashed it and the story of how they began is nuts, selling clothes out of the back of their cars and doing drops via text is mental.

They’ve done really well to keep up with the hype. There are so many cheap copies of the classic tracksuits now and they’ve managed to still keep their brand relevant with new stuff, insanely impressive.

What would you say to someone that wanted to start their own business?

There’s no better time to start than now. Leaving it until later shouldn’t be an option. Even if you’d don’t have the capital to start up a business, teach yourself skills that’ll help you when you do. There’s genuinely an unlimited free library of tutorials online that can teach you the skills you need to start any business. It won’t always work out and that’s cool, you learn more from fucking up than you do from getting it right the first time, Corteiz wasn’t Clint’s first brand and even he’s said that taught him what he needed to know to be able to go out there and create the empire he’s got.

Some very helpful advice for someone that needs it! What's next for Split?

I’ve got about 5 drops planned in advance, so it’d be lovely to continue growing at the same rate and then delve a little more into the guerrilla style of marketing.

I’d also like to develop a true core following. 100 cult followers are always better than 10,000 that don’t really care about what you do.

I look forward to seeing what you've got planned. Finally, do you have anyone you would like to shout out?

Yeah definitely, would love to give props to my mum and dad for supporting the dream. Big up to my boys and my Mrs too who do all of the modeling and help me tweak designs, they deserve their flowers too in all of this. Wouldn’t be able to do any of this without them all.

We cannot wait to see you shine, thank you so much for your time in speaking with us!
